Swimming Pool

The Royal Continental pool is located on the tenth floor of the hotel, suspended between the Gulf of Naples and the Pizzofalcone hill.

Designed by architect Gio Ponti, it seeks to establish a dialogue between landscape—Castel dell’Ovo to the south and the Pizzofalcone hill to the north—and architecture.
The walls enclosing the pool on three sides create a sense of seclusion on the rooftop, directing the gaze toward a single, striking horizon: the Sorrentine Peninsula—alongside the boundless expanse of sky and sea.

The rooftop pool stands as a defining expression of the Royal’s forward-looking design philosophy, where technological innovation is paired with a deep sensitivity to natural resources.
Originally conceived for the sixth floor and later repositioned by Ponti to the tenth, the pool is fed with seawater, drawn upward through a sophisticated engineering system that also contributes to cooling the building’s infrastructure.

In 1954, the project was featured on the cover of Domus (issue no. 291) under the title “A Pool on the Roof.”
